Super League leaders fail to score points during weekend fixtures

Greece’s Super League title race remained tightly contested over the weekend as the top three teams all failed to secure victories. AEK Athens and PAOK battled to a 0-0 draw on Sunday at Toumba Stadium, while league leaders’ closest challengers Olympiakos were also held scoreless in a surprising stalemate against Levadiakos on Saturday, leaving the Super League standings unchanged after matchday 21.

The highly anticipated clash between second-placed AEK and third-placed PAOK delivered entertainment despite the lack of goals. AEK goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha emerged as the hero for his side, saving a first-half penalty taken by Giorgos Giakoumakis. Additionally, AEK struck the PAOK woodwork twice during the match, demonstrating that both teams created opportunities in what proved to be an evenly matched encounter.

Super League Leaders Drop Points Against Underdogs

Meanwhile, Olympiakos’ title ambitions suffered a setback as they were held to a goalless draw by Levadiakos. The match featured controversy when Levadiakos believed they had taken the lead through Sebastian Palacios, only for the goal to be correctly disallowed due to a foul committed by the Argentine forward. The result represented a missed opportunity for Olympiakos to close the gap on AEK at the summit.

The weekend’s results highlighted the competitive nature of Greek football’s top division this season. With all three title contenders dropping points, the race for the championship remains wide open with significant matches still to be played.

Panathinaikos Fails to Capitalize on Opportunity

Fifth-placed Panathinaikos also squandered a chance to move closer to the top four after drawing 1-1 at home against struggling Larissa. The visitors took an unexpected lead through Lubomir Tupta before Panathinaikos captain Tasos Bakasetas salvaged a point for the hosts with an equalizer. However, the draw represented two valuable points dropped against one of the league’s lower-ranked sides.

Fourth-placed Levadiakos maintained their position despite their draw with Olympiakos, keeping a six-point cushion over Panathinaikos. The result underscored Levadiakos’ impressive campaign as they continue to exceed expectations in the Greek Super League this season.

Weekend Results Across Greek Football

Other matches across the division produced more goals and excitement. Kifissia and OFI shared the spoils in an entertaining 2-2 draw, while Panetolikos secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Asteras Tripolis. In contrast, Volos and Aris played out a 1-1 stalemate, with both teams earning a point.

The round of fixtures continues on Monday when Atromitos hosts Panserraikos, providing another opportunity for teams to improve their positions in the tightly contested league table.

Current Super League Standings

After 21 games, AEK Athens leads the Super League with 49 points, maintaining a narrow two-point advantage over Olympiakos in second place with 47 points. PAOK sits in third position with 46 points, just one point behind Olympiakos. According to the current standings, Levadiakos occupies fourth place with 39 points, followed by Panathinaikos in fifth with 33 points.

Aris currently holds sixth position with 27 points, while Volos sits in seventh with 26 points. It should be noted that both PAOK and Panathinaikos have a game in hand, meaning they could potentially close gaps on teams above them if they secure victories in their postponed fixtures.

The title race is expected to intensify in the coming weeks as teams navigate the remaining fixtures of the season. With such narrow margins separating the top three clubs and both PAOK and Panathinaikos holding games in hand, the championship picture could shift dramatically depending on upcoming results.
