Greek soccer clubs Panathinaikos and PAOK will face Czech side Viktoria Plzen and Spanish club Celta de Vigo respectively in the UEFA Europa League playoff round, according to the draw conducted on Friday. The two Greek teams earned their spots in the Europa League playoffs after successfully completing the league phase of the competition on Thursday, and now must navigate two-legged ties to advance to the coveted round of 16.

The playoff fixtures represent a critical stage for both Greek clubs as they seek to extend their European campaigns. Panathinaikos will meet Viktoria Plzen in what will be their second encounter this season, having previously played to a goalless draw against the Czech team during the league phase. Meanwhile, PAOK drew Celta de Vigo as their opponent in the knockout stage.

Europa League Playoff Schedule and Format

The first legs of the Europa League playoff ties are scheduled to take place on February 19, with both Greek clubs enjoying home advantage. According to the authorities, Panathinaikos will host Viktoria Plzen at their stadium, while PAOK will similarly welcome their Spanish opponents for the opening encounter. The return legs are set for February 26, when the Greek teams will travel to face their respective rivals on foreign soil.

The two-legged format gives both clubs opportunities to secure aggregate victories and progress in the competition. Home advantage in the first leg could prove crucial for the Greek sides as they look to establish favorable positions before the away matches.

Panathinaikos Faces Familiar Opposition

Panathinaikos’ previous encounter with Viktoria Plzen during the league phase ended in a scoreless stalemate, providing both teams with insight into each other’s tactical approaches. The familiarity between the two sides could influence how the playoff tie unfolds, with both coaching staffs having already studied their opponents extensively.

However, playoff football typically brings heightened intensity compared to league phase matches, as teams face immediate elimination if they fail to advance. The Czech side has demonstrated consistency in European competitions in recent years, presenting a formidable challenge for the Greek champions.

PAOK Takes on Spanish Challenge

PAOK will confront a different type of test against Celta de Vigo, a team from Spain’s La Liga known for its technical quality and attacking style. The Spanish club brings experience from one of Europe’s top domestic leagues, though they too will be determined to progress in the Europa League after navigating the league phase.

Additionally, the Greek side has shown resilience in European competition this season, and home support in Thessaloniki could provide a significant advantage in the first leg. The matchup represents an opportunity for PAOK to measure themselves against opposition from a more prominent European league.

Path to Europa League Round of 16

Both Greek clubs understand the significance of reaching the round of 16, which would represent a major achievement in their European campaigns. The Europa League playoffs serve as the final hurdle before the knockout rounds proper, where the competition’s intensity increases substantially.

In contrast to the league phase format, the playoff round demands maximum performance across both legs, with away goals no longer counting as tiebreakers under current UEFA regulations. If ties remain level after both matches, extra time and potentially penalty shootouts will determine which teams advance.

The playoff matches will conclude by late February, with the winners advancing to the round of 16 draw. Both Panathinaikos and PAOK will have approximately two weeks to prepare for their crucial first-leg encounters on February 19.
