BMW is preparing to launch the next-generation X5 SUV with significant technological updates and diverse powertrain options, according to recent announcements from the German automaker. The new BMW X5 is expected to compete directly with premium rivals including the Range Rover Sport and Audi Q7 when it arrives in early 2027. BMW has confirmed the vehicle will be revealed in mid-2026, positioning the updated X5 as a crucial model in the brand’s extensive product offensive.

The automaker stated that customer deliveries of the new X5 are scheduled to begin approximately six months after its official unveiling, placing first deliveries at the start of 2027. This launch represents one of 40 new or revised BMW models set to debut by the end of 2027, according to the company.

New BMW X5 Platform and Powertrain Options

Unlike BMW’s smaller Neue Klasse vehicles, the next-generation X5 will retain the same platform architecture as its predecessor while incorporating heavily updated technology. However, the powertrain lineup will expand dramatically to include petrol, diesel, hybrid, and fully electric options. Additionally, BMW has indicated that hydrogen fuel cell variants may be available in select markets, demonstrating the brand’s commitment to multiple electrification pathways.

The interior of the new BMW X5 will receive substantial updates, aligning with the technological advancements found throughout BMW’s latest model range. These changes are expected to include enhanced digital interfaces and improved materials, though specific details have not been fully disclosed by the manufacturer.

Competition in the Premium SUV Segment

The updated X5 will face established competition from luxury SUV rivals that currently dominate the segment. Meanwhile, both the Range Rover Sport and Audi Q7 remain popular choices among premium buyers, with significant discounts currently available on new models. Market analysts suggest the X5’s diverse powertrain options could provide a competitive advantage as consumer preferences continue shifting toward electrification.

In contrast to the X5’s evolutionary approach, BMW’s smaller Neue Klasse models like the iX3 and upcoming 3 Series utilize an entirely new platform designed specifically for electric propulsion. The iX3 has already begun arriving in the UK market, with reviewers praising its range, handling, and autonomous driving features.

BMW’s Neue Klasse Rollout Strategy

The Neue Klasse 3 Series is scheduled to arrive in mid-2026, closely related to the iX3 with similar platform technology and styling. BMW will offer both combustion engines and electric powertrains for the 3 Series, targeting improved efficiency across the lineup.

Following the X5 launch, BMW plans to introduce a significantly updated 5 Series facelift in 2027. Despite the current 5 Series only entering production in 2023, the life-cycle impulse will include extensive exterior changes and a completely redesigned interior to align with Neue Klasse design language.

The flagship X7 SUV will arrive later in 2027, utilizing the X5 as its technological foundation. According to BMW, the X7 will finally receive plug-in hybrid and all-electric powertrain options for the first time, expanding its appeal in increasingly electrified markets. The X7 will also adopt the Neue Klasse design direction with updated exterior styling and cabin layout.

BMW has not yet released detailed pricing information for the new X5, though further specifications and market availability details are expected closer to the mid-2026 reveal date.
