A controversial injury-time penalty decision rescued Olympiakos from defeat against AEK Athens in the Greek Super League derby on Sunday, as the match at Nea Filadelfia ended 1-1. The late equalizer allowed PAOK to climb into second place in the league standings, with AEK maintaining their position at the top of the table. The dramatic conclusion came in the 106th minute after 14 minutes of stoppage time were added to the contest.

According to match reports, AEK took the lead just before the hour mark when Razvan Marin delivered a corner kick from the right side. Substitute Varga rose in the penalty area to head the ball past Olympiakos goalkeeper Kostantis Tzolakis, breaking the deadlock after a period of sustained pressure from the visitors.

Late Penalty Drama Defines Greek Super League Derby

The home side appeared headed for victory after creating several additional scoring opportunities. AEK struck the crossbar and had two or three more clear chances to extend their advantage throughout the second half. However, the Greek Super League derby took a dramatic turn deep into stoppage time when referee awarded Olympiakos a penalty for a challenge by Harold Moukoudi on Andre Luiz.

Mehdi Taremi stepped up to take the crucial penalty kick and converted the opportunity in the 106th minute to secure a share of the points. The decision proved highly controversial, with the penalty awarded 14 minutes into added time sparking debate about the lengthy stoppage period.

Emotional Victory for PAOK in Thessaloniki

Meanwhile, PAOK secured a convincing 4-1 victory over bottom-placed Panserraikos at Toumba Stadium in Thessaloniki. The match carried special significance as it came shortly after a tragic accident in Romania that claimed the lives of seven PAOK supporters. At exactly 27 minutes and one second into the match, corresponding to the January 27 accident date, supporters illuminated the terraces with hundreds of flares in tribute to the deceased fans.

On the pitch, PAOK dominated the first half with all five goals scored before the interval. Alexander Jeremejeff, Kiril Despodov, Dimitris Pelkas, and Alessandro Vogliacco all found the net for the hosts, while Volnei scored a consolation goal for the struggling visitors.

League Standings Shift After Weekend Results

Additionally, other results around the Greek Super League saw significant movement in the standings. Levadiakos strengthened their grip on a top-four position with a 3-1 victory over Asteras Tripolis, consolidating their impressive campaign.

Panathinaikos maintained pressure on the teams above them with a comprehensive 3-0 win against 10-man Kifissia. Andreas Tetteh opened the scoring against his former club, marking his first goal for Panathinaikos, while Karol Swiderski and Vicente Taborda added further goals to secure all three points.

In contrast, Larissa escaped the relegation zone with an important 2-0 away victory at neighboring rivals Volos on Saturday. OFI claimed a 2-1 win at Atromitos, and Aris secured three points with a narrow 1-0 victory at Panetolikos in Agrinio.

Current League Standings

The latest results have reshuffled the top of the Greek Super League table. AEK Athens leads with 45 points despite dropping two points in the derby, while PAOK’s victory lifted them to second place with 44 points. Olympiakos sits third with 43 points following their dramatic late equalizer, while Levadiakos occupies fourth position with 38 points and Panathinaikos rounds out the top five with 29 points.

The title race remains tight with PAOK, Olympiakos, and Panathinaikos all holding a game in hand, which could further impact the standings in the coming weeks as teams continue their pursuit of the championship and European qualification places.
