US President Donald Trump has reaffirmed the strength of Greek-American relations during a White House ceremony for Greece’s new ambassador to Washington, Antonis Alexandridis. Trump described Greece as a “valuable partner and ally” and stated that bilateral ties are “stronger than ever,” according to reports from the credential presentation event.

During the formal ceremony, Trump praised the friendship between the two nations as “strong, historic and rooted in our shared democratic and spiritual heritage.” The president emphasized that bilateral relations have reached their highest level in recent years and expressed his commitment to deepening cooperation across multiple strategic sectors.

Strategic Cooperation in Defense and Energy

Trump specifically highlighted Greece’s efforts to meet NATO’s defense-spending target, noting that Athens is working toward contributing 5% of gross domestic product to defense. He commended Greece for demonstrating “real leadership” within the alliance, adding that “peace is secured through strength,” according to statements from the White House meeting.

Additionally, the president addressed energy cooperation between the United States and Greece. Trump pointed to US liquefied natural gas exports and infrastructure projects related to the Vertical Corridor, stating these initiatives will enhance energy security throughout the broader region.

Maritime and Environmental Policy Alignment

The president also expressed appreciation for Greece’s stance at the International Maritime Organization, where Athens abstained during the adoption of a net-zero emissions framework. Trump said the regulation would have placed undue burdens on consumers, businesses and global trade, praising what he described as Greece’s courage in the decision.

However, this position marks a departure from the maritime industry’s ongoing efforts to address climate change through international shipping regulations. Greece, as one of the world’s leading maritime nations, plays a significant role in shaping global shipping policy.

Expanding Trade and Investment in Greek-American Relations

Trump outlined several areas for expanded economic cooperation between the two countries. The president mentioned ongoing discussions about building US frigates in Greece, signaling potential growth in bilateral shipbuilding cooperation. Meanwhile, he emphasized opportunities to strengthen ties in shipping, trade and investment sectors.

During the meeting, Trump requested that Ambassador Alexandridis convey warm greetings to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The president expressed admiration for Greece and indicated his intention to visit the country, though no specific timeline was provided for such a trip.

Implications for Regional Stability

The strengthening of Greek-American relations carries broader implications for regional security in the Eastern Mediterranean and Balkans. In contrast to periods of fluctuating bilateral ties, current cooperation spans defense, energy infrastructure and economic development initiatives that affect multiple allied nations.

Furthermore, Greece’s geographic position makes it a crucial partner for US strategic interests in southeastern Europe. The country serves as a gateway for energy projects and maintains important military facilities that support NATO operations in the region.

The emphasis on defense spending and energy cooperation reflects ongoing US priorities in strengthening European allies’ capabilities. According to the administration’s statements, these partnerships are essential for maintaining stability amid evolving security challenges in Europe and the Mediterranean.

The next steps in Greek-American cooperation will likely involve further discussions on the shipbuilding projects Trump mentioned, though specific timelines and contractual details have not been publicly disclosed. Officials from both countries are expected to continue negotiations on expanding bilateral economic and defense ties in the coming months.
