The Rising Power of Wellness and the Example of Pavliani

Every autumn, when nature changes “outfit” and forests turn golden-yellow, the urge to escape the city becomes irresistible. Central Greece, with the imposing mountain mass of Oiti, is one of the most popular getaways—hiding “gems” that blend natural beauty with genuine local passion. Among them, Pavliani stands out: a place that for years was a weekend-trippers’ best-kept secret, but has now evolved into a point of reference for alternative tourism. Yet Pavliani is only a small glimpse of the country’s wider potential, which—according to recent studies—is preparing to claim a leading role on the global map of wellness and health tourism.

Oiti’s mountain refuge

Less than three hours from Athens, at the gateway to Oiti National Park, Pavliani welcomes visitors with an air of calm and a creative, artistic spirit. Despite the popularity it has gained in recent years, the village remains cared for and spotless, preserving its authenticity thanks to the efforts of its residents. Walking through the narrow streets of Upper Pavliani, you immediately sense this is no ordinary settlement. Paintings, clever sketches on walls and bins, and artistic interventions on abandoned buildings turn a simple stroll into an interactive art trail, breathing new life and color into the landscape.

Nearby, the Vardousia mountains meet Oiti and Giona, while a few kilometers farther on, the village of Athanasios Diakos (formerly Ano Mousounitsa), perched at 1,100 meters, offers culinary highlights for lovers of excellent meat and local dairy products.

A park built with love and ingenuity

The area’s signature attraction is the natural recreation park at the springs of the Asopos River. It is a unique example of how a natural environment can be thoughtfully enhanced—proof of the decisive role played by locals’ love for their homeland. Armed with humor, imagination, and volunteer work, residents created a space adored by both children and adults. Hammocks, wooden loungers, treehouses, a cable crossing above the river, and musical bridges form a fairytale-like setting.

And the routes don’t stop there. Hiking trails start from the village, including one leading to the “Throne of Zeus,” with panoramic views over the Maliakos Gulf, as well as a route to the famous “Iron Throne.” This 550-kilogram construction—an unmistakable nod to Game of Thrones—was completed in April 2019 after 800 hours of volunteer work and has since become a landmark of the area.

Greece as a global wellness destination

The Pavliani experience—combining nature, exercise, and mental uplift—fits squarely within the broader category of wellness tourism, a sector where Greece appears to hold untapped “gold.” According to a new study prepared by Elitour and funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Greece ranks fifth worldwide (tied with India) as a wellness tourism destination. Yet there is a striking paradox: in actual revenues, Greece stands only in 45th place—revealing a loss of billions of euros.

The financial data is revealing. Wellness tourism currently generates around €3 billion annually, representing 10% of the country’s tourism GDP, while projections point to a surge to €15 billion within the next decade. At the same time, medical tourism adds another €100 million per year, of which €22 million comes exclusively from emergency services.

Comparative advantages and the “Blue Zones”

The study’s findings highlight Greece’s unique strengths. The country is home to one of the world’s five “Blue Zones”—Ikaria—where exceptionally high rates of longevity are recorded. In addition, Greece has more than 750 thermal springs and the well-known Mediterranean diet, all of which act as natural magnets for visitors.

In the medical-services sector, competitive pricing for treatments such as IVF, dialysis, dental care, and cosmetic procedures already attracts patients from the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Middle East. Still, estimates suggest Greece is utilizing less than 30% of its full potential in this field.

Strategic planning and investment

To bridge the gap between potential and revenues, the report proposes targeted investments totaling just €13 million. These funds should be directed toward a unified national strategy, simplification of the regulatory framework, staff training, and digital upgrades. Also on the agenda are upgrading smaller spa facilities into world-class wellness centers, forging international partnerships, and establishing special entry visas for medical purposes.

As Elitour President Giorgos Patoulis noted, Greece has everything it needs to become a global leader in both medical tourism and wellness tourism. What’s missing is the right framework and the funding to reach that goal. From Pavliani’s trails to modern medical-care facilities, the country is being called to organize its natural and scientific wealth—offering complete, high-quality experiences that today’s traveler is actively seeking.
