It’s common to experience an odd flicker of doubt when browsing social media late at night. A speech by a politician. A famous person expressing regret for something scandalous. A CEO announcing layoffs in a shaky video. People may have questioned the accuracy of the information a few years ago. The question feels different now. Was it really that real?

One of the defining feelings of the AI era is this subdued uncertainty. Furthermore, the unsettling reality is that AI disinformation is a relationship issue that is gradually changing how people trust one another rather than merely a technical issue.

The technology itself is almost unsettlingly good. With just a few seconds of recorded audio, deepfakes can accurately mimic voices and faces. Synthetic voice scams are becoming more prevalent, according to fraud investigators, with criminals pretending to be family members during emergencies. In one well-publicized instance, workers transferred $25 million after their company’s chief financial officer appeared to approve the payment via a deepfake video call. There is a feeling that the threat is no longer theoretical when events such as these take place. It is already present and subtly permeating daily discourse. However, the fake content itself might not be the deeper disruption. It’s the uncertainty that follows.

The preconceived notions about evidence start to erode when people realize that any image, voice, or video could be staged. Seeing no longer equates to believing. Nor is hearing. Even genuine recordings begin to seem a little dubious, as though reality itself is now negotiable.

Researchers refer to this as the “liar’s dividend.” People may start to discount genuine evidence as fabrication when fake media becomes widespread. A real video can be dismissed with a shrug: most likely artificial intelligence. It’s an odd reversal. The ability of technology to fabricate convincing lies also makes it simpler to deny the truth.

It’s difficult to ignore how casually artificial intelligence has permeated daily life when strolling around a university campus these days. Students ask chatbots to assist them with their writing. Teachers test out automated grading systems. As they compare AI-generated images on laptops, a group of engineering students laugh at how lifelike they appear. At first glance, it seems harmless, effective, even impressive. However, beneath the convenience, there’s also a subtle change taking place. People are gradually outsourcing judgment in addition to labor.

This shift may help to explain why false information feels so different in the AI era compared to earlier rumors and hoaxes. Persuasion was the foundation of traditional disinformation. Uncertainty is essential to synthetic media.

In the past, the internet relied on a shaky form of trust. People relied on search engines to provide them with information. They relied on pictures as proof. They had faith that the voice on the phone belonged to the speaker. Although those presumptions were never flawless, they were reliable enough to keep the system functioning. These foundations are now shaky.

It’s possible that society is getting close to what some researchers refer to as a “synthetic reality threshold,” which is the point at which human senses are no longer able to accurately discern between authentic and fake media. There is detection software, of course, but the arms race between developers and detectors seems to go on forever. Improvements in deception swiftly follow each improvement in identification. However, concentrating solely on technology might overlook the more fundamental problem.

Families are already coming up with their own fixes. Some households now use secret “code words” to confirm identities during emergency phone calls. Others ask family members to complete strange little tasks during video chats, like blinking twice, holding up a particular object, or quickly turning your head. Although these gestures may seem absurd, they convey a significant message. People are changing not only in terms of technology but also in terms of society. In other words, relationships are becoming more and more involved in the fight against false information.

Institutions are having difficulty adjusting to this change. Media literacy is taught in schools. Businesses use detection software. Regulations are created by governments. These efforts are all important. However, there is a persistent suspicion that the issue is more complex than verification tools can address. No amount of fact-checking can completely restore trust if it starts to deteriorate.

False medical research is a concern for hospitals. Financial companies worry that deepfake executives will announce fictitious mergers, which could cause stock prices to plummet. Instructors report that students are making fake pictures of staff and other students. Every incident erodes trust in the evidence that is shared. As this pattern develops, it seems as though society is about to enter a peculiar epistemological era in which the question is not just what is true but also how we know at all. However, whenever people experience moments that are clearly human, an odd thing happens.

A picture of a flamingo in an uncomfortable position scratching itself won a photography contest last year. The image appeared so bizarre—almost too perfectly surreal—that judges first thought it was AI-generated. However, the image proved to be authentic. The unpredictable absurdity of nature had created something that no algorithm had purposefully created. There is a quiet lesson in that little moment.

Patterns can be replicated by machines. They have the ability to remix faces, voices, and artistic styles. However, they are not as aware of the world as people are. They don’t stop at odd moments in the outdoors or ponder why something seems a little strange. In an AI-mediated world, those instincts—the human capacity for skepticism and curiosity—may prove to be the most effective defense. This brings up the topic of relationships once more.

The problem of misinformation may be caused by technology, but whether or not it spreads will ultimately depend on trust. Have faith in organizations. Have faith in local communities. Have faith in the people we see and hear on a daily basis.

Whether society fully comprehends this change is still up for debate. The discussion frequently centers on algorithms and detection tools, as though false information were just a software flaw that needed to be fixed. However, the deeper problem seems more philosophical than technical.

How to spot every fake might not be the real question. It might be about reestablishing the tenuous network of trust that permits truth to exist at all.
