Panathinaikos Basketball Club officially signed American forward Nigel Hayes-Davis on Thursday in a deal worth approximately €10 million over two and a half years, the team announced. The Panathinaikos signing comes after a dramatic last-minute reversal in the 31-year-old player’s transfer plans, with Hayes-Davis initially appearing set to join Israeli club Hapoel Tel Aviv instead of the Greek powerhouse.

According to sports website SDNA.gr, the former NBA player had rejected Panathinaikos before changing course. Club owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos revealed the acquisition early Thursday morning via Instagram before the official announcement confirmed the deal.

Hayes-Davis Transfer Details and Contract Value

The substantial €10 million contract represents a significant investment by Panathinaikos for the experienced forward. Hayes-Davis, who was recently released from the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks, had attracted interest from several European teams. The two-and-a-half-year agreement brings the player to Athens through the 2027-28 season.

The club’s official statement confirmed the acquisition, stating that “Panathinaikos AKTOR announces the acquisition of athlete Nigel Hayes-Davis for the next two and a half years.” Additionally, the deal strengthens Panathinaikos’ roster as they compete in both the Greek basketball league and EuroLeague competitions.

Last Season’s Final Four MVP Joins Greek Giants

Hayes-Davis arrives in Athens with impressive credentials, having earned Final Four MVP honors last season. His performance in European basketball’s premier competition made him one of the most sought-after free agents following his NBA departure. The forward’s combination of scoring ability and versatility made him an attractive target for top European clubs.

However, the transfer saga took unexpected turns before reaching its conclusion. Initial reports suggested Hayes-Davis had declined Panathinaikos’ offer and was leaning toward Hapoel Tel Aviv. Meanwhile, the dramatic reversal demonstrates the club’s persistence in securing their top target despite early setbacks.

Panathinaikos Strengthens Roster with Experienced Forward

The acquisition of Nigel Hayes-Davis addresses Panathinaikos’ need for frontcourt depth and scoring punch. At 31 years old, the American forward brings both NBA experience and proven success at the highest level of European basketball. His arrival could prove crucial as the team pursues championships on multiple fronts.

In contrast to smaller market teams, Panathinaikos demonstrated its financial muscle with the substantial contract offer. The Greek club’s willingness to invest heavily in talent reflects their ambitions to compete for EuroLeague glory. Furthermore, owner Giannakopoulos’ direct involvement in announcing the signing underscores the acquisition’s importance to the organization.

Impact on European Basketball Landscape

The Panathinaikos signing of Hayes-Davis shifts the balance of power among European basketball’s elite clubs. By securing last season’s Final Four MVP, the Athens-based team has made a clear statement about their championship aspirations. European basketball observers note that such high-profile acquisitions often trigger competitive responses from rival clubs.

According to the club announcement, Hayes-Davis joins a Panathinaikos squad already featuring several talented players. The forward’s ability to perform in pressure situations, demonstrated by his MVP performance, addresses a critical need for the team. Additionally, his NBA background brings valuable experience to the roster.

The player is expected to undergo medical examinations and begin training with his new team in the coming days, though authorities have not confirmed specific dates. Panathinaikos has not announced when Hayes-Davis will make his official debut for the club.
