Greece’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2026, Akylas, has successfully qualified to compete in Vienna this May following his victory at the national selection show “Sing for Greece” on Sunday. The 27-year-old artist from Serres will perform his electro-pop track “Ferto” (Bring it), which blends contemporary sounds with traditional Cretan lyra elements.

According to his Instagram post, Akylas expressed overwhelming emotions about his Eurovision qualification. The performer stated he keeps pinching himself to confirm the experience is real and not a dream, adding that he feels both happy and proud of this achievement.

Breaking Traditional Eurovision Patterns

“Ferto” represents a departure from the heavier folkloric styles often associated with Greece’s Eurovision entries. The song combines electro-pop production with the traditional Cretan lyra and incorporates contemporary slang, creating a modern fusion that resonated with audiences on social media platforms.

The track has garnered a passionate following online, with fans praising its fresh approach to representing Greek culture on the international stage. This shift toward a more contemporary sound reflects changing attitudes about how national identity can be expressed through music at Eurovision.

Artist’s Journey and Message of Empowerment

Akylas Mytilineos began his musical journey at the music school in his native Serres, in northern Greece, where he first performed publicly during school events. However, his path has not been without challenges, as the artist has spoken openly about experiencing bullying related to his weight during his youth.

In his social media message following the qualification, Akylas encouraged his followers to embrace self-acceptance. He referenced Lady Gaga, whom he cited as a powerful symbol of empowerment, urging people to remain proud of their identity and never stop pursuing their dreams.

Collaborative Effort Behind the Eurovision Entry

The creation of “Ferto” involved a team of accomplished songwriters and producers. Akylas collaborated with Orfeas Nonis on the lyrics, while the music was composed by Papatanice and TEO.x3, bringing diverse expertise to the project.

Additionally, TEO.x3 brings previous Eurovision experience to the table, having represented Greece at the 2014 contest as a member of the duo Freaky Fortune. This background adds a layer of international competition knowledge to the current entry.

Personal Narrative Woven Into the Song

Beyond its upbeat sound and energetic performance style, “Ferto” carries deeply personal significance for Akylas. The bridge section of the song addresses his mother directly, with lyrics about overcoming past hardships and working to ensure the family never experiences deprivation again.

Meanwhile, this personal narrative adds emotional depth to what might otherwise be perceived as purely a dance-pop track. The combination of vulnerability and celebration creates a multifaceted entry that resonates on both emotional and entertainment levels.

Road to Eurovision 2026 in Vienna

Greece’s Eurovision participation continues a long tradition of the country competing in the annual song contest. In contrast to some years where Greece has opted for more traditional or ballad-style entries, the selection of Akylas and “Ferto” signals a willingness to experiment with contemporary genres.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2026 will take place in Vienna, Austria, this May. As preparations continue, Akylas will work on refining his performance and staging to maximize impact on the international stage, though specific details about rehearsal schedules and performance plans have not been confirmed by authorities.
