Tesla Model Y and Model 3 vehicles now feature Grok, an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by xAI, a company founded by Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The integration of Grok into Tesla vehicles brings advanced AI assistance to drivers, offering customizable personalities that range from family-friendly options to adult-rated modes, marking a significant step in automotive AI integration.

The Grok AI chatbot is currently being rolled out to Tesla Model Y SUVs and Model 3 sedans, with plans to extend the technology to Model S and Model X vehicles through over-the-air software updates. According to Tesla, owners must have a Premium Connectivity subscription or stable Wi-Fi connection to access the feature, which can be activated using controls on the steering wheel and touchscreen.

How Grok AI Enhances the Tesla Driving Experience

The chatbot offers practical functionality beyond simple voice commands. Grok can program the vehicle’s navigation system to set destinations, adjust routes in real-time, and highlight nearby points of interest. Additionally, it provides drivers with advice on best driving practices and helps interpret dashboard alerts.

However, Grok’s capabilities extend far beyond basic automotive functions. The AI assistant can answer questions on diverse topics including physics, mathematics, biology, history, and philosophy. Like other AI programs such as ChatGPT that have recently been integrated into automotive virtual assistants, Grok is designed to respond to natural language commands and deliver smooth, human-like conversational flow.

Multiple Personality Modes for Every Occasion

Tesla owners can choose from various Grok personalities to suit different needs and preferences. Standard modes include Assistant, Language Tutor, Therapist, Storyteller, and Meditation options. Meanwhile, more unconventional choices are available, such as a Conspiracy mode designed to mimic a conspiracy theorist and a Doctor mode that responds to medical queries.

Family-friendly options include Kids Story Time and Kids Trivia Game modes for younger passengers. In contrast, Tesla has also introduced adult-rated modes labeled as NSFW (not safe for work), including Unhinged, Motivation, Argumentative, Romantic, and Sexy personalities, which could potentially prove distracting during vehicle operation.

Privacy and Voice Customization Features

According to Tesla, conversations with the Grok chatbot are anonymous and not associated with individual vehicles, addressing potential privacy concerns among users. The company emphasized that this ensures user privacy regardless of the conversation content or chosen personality mode.

The AI assistant also offers voice customization options. Users can select from upbeat or soothing female voices, calm or smooth male voices, or a British male voice named Leo, allowing drivers to personalize their in-car AI experience further.

Pricing and Availability

The Tesla Model Y and Model 3, which now feature Grok integration, are available starting from £41,990 and £37,990 respectively. The technology represents the latest advancement in Tesla’s ongoing effort to integrate cutting-edge artificial intelligence into its vehicle lineup.

Tesla has not announced a specific timeline for when the Grok AI update will reach Model S and Model X vehicles, though the company confirmed the rollout will occur through its standard over-the-air software update system. Owners of these models will need to wait for official notification regarding availability in their vehicles.
